Info about dogs and new puppies

Mastik my dog is a Border Terrier X Lakeland Terrier  now about 10 months,
and i just find it so fascinating how fast they grow, I mean one of his friends a choc lab who lives down my road is the same age as him now and he is three times taller than him! I know my friend is getting a a Border and I have to warn him about getting one, although they are great they need a lot of training and are Very cheeky and I also would advise putting away any toys, cables and other things you don't want chewed, especially shoes which, from my experience, can be de-laced very quickly!!!!

I was also reading a magazine, and a woman was talking about her dog who had recently died, and she was upset as she didn't have many photos of him. Because of this I would recommend having a camera or a phone with you all the time, dogs do many funny things and can be great fun to play with!

Suitable toys are always a puzzle as my dog has so many! For a puppy you need something which would withstand his SHARP growing teeth and something that cannot be swallowed as many puppies can choke one small everyday objects. My dog loves soft toys, but the best things i would recommend is a tennis ball and/or a Kong, which is a rubber toy which can be filled with treats. Personally i fill it with peanut butter and other treats, but i always freeze it as it takes longer for my dog to eat it! Another important thing your dog should have is a good comfy bed, make sure it will be big enough for your puppy for when it is older, and also puppies like beds with sides on, as they like to snuggle up and stretch out leaning against them! Personally i would recommend beds from pets at home as Mastik, my dog has one which was about £25 and it is memory foam and it has sides and it was rated better than a bed worth £100 in Your Dog Magazine!

A puppy will be very tired, and not want to do things for the first couple of weeks, let him sleep and if you do need to wake him up do it gently! After he starts to be awake for longer and starts moving about more, i would advise to put a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs as puppies should not go up and down the stairs until they are about 6 months old, as this could lead to problems with their limbs when they are older, like arthritis.

I also recommend to get a large folder/ binder  to put all of your dogs paperwork in, or i have an app for Iphone by pets at home, which allows you to store more than one pet's details in and even alerts you when the next vet trip is due! I have recently sucscribed to Your Dog Magazine, and i would recomend it to anyone who owns, about to own or just generally likes dogs, as it is packed full with info and cute photos and even chances to win things!
